17 April 2023, Thanks to the political will of the Malta Government, the wisdom of the Court and the unceasing work of the Federation for Hunting and Conservation - Malta (FKNK), with great satisfaction, the FKNK Wishes a Good and Safe Season of Turtle Dove Spring Hunting that opens on April 18, 2023. This traditional socio-cultural season is expected to close on April 30, 2023 at noon, unless, in the meantime, the set national bag limit of 1500 turtle doves is reached, in which case the season is closed.
The FKNK expects hunters to strictly observe the relative laws and regulations, including the reporting aspect as stipulated in the special license document. The FKNK hopes that it will soon publish guidelines regarding reporting obligations.
The positive data collected by the FKNK during the turtle dove hunting seasons of September 2021 and 2022 through the 'Adult to Juvenile Ratio Surveys', the FKNK Project of 'Close-breeding and Release of Turtle Doves into the Wild' and the so-called "Turtle Dove Hunting Sustainable Index" positive result obtained in the scientific Study that the FKNK did during the turtle dove hunting season in spring 2022, have all led to the opening of this 2023 turtle dove spring hunting season. All this was also possible thanks to the help and voluntary participation of hunters and trappers members of the FKNK.
Therefore, the FKNK is once again encouraging, and already thanks the voluntary participation of its member hunters in the study "Turtle Dove Hunting Sustainable Index" which will be carried out again during this turtle dove hunting season between the 18th and 30th of April 2023. As last year, the necessary data will be collected through the compilation of the attached Form by the hunting members during the season, which Form must be returned to FKNK at the end of the season. Printed copies of the Form will also be available from the FKNK Msida Office and from the various FKNK outlets in Malta and Gozo.
